Zarzal is a barrio located in Río Grande, a municipality in the northeastern region of Puerto Rico. Spanning approximately 24 square kilometers, Zarzal occupies a significant portion of Río Grande's inland territory, positioned away from the coastal areas that define much of the municipality's eastern edge. The barrio's name, derived from the Spanish word for bramble or thorny vegetation, reflects the natural landscape characteristic of this part of northeastern Puerto Rico, where inland areas historically supported mixed vegetation and agricultural use before modern development.
